Canton - Burder Jule Wells, 97, of 16 White Oak Ridge, passed away Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Silver Bluff Village. A lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Jessie L. and Elizabeth Ann Reeves Wells. Mr. Wells retired from Champion Paper as a Maintenance Supervisor in 1972 with 40 years of dedicated service. For more than 25 years he was closely associated with the Champion Employee Christmas Basket Program and the Canton Community Christmas Tree Party. He served as the chairman of the Christmas Party event for a number of years which provided lunch for hundreds of underprivileged who attended the annual Christmas party. Mr. Wells served as chairman of the Haywood County Democratic party and also a precinct chairman. He had a great concern for his community and was instrumental in the upgrading of the roads and schools for the people of Haywood County. He was a member of the Haywood Board of Health for nine years and played an important role in the improvement of health care for the children of Haywood County. Mr. Wells was a member of Longs United Methodist Church where he taught the adult and men's Sunday school classes for more than 25 years. He served as a Lay Leader and Lay Speaker, was chairman of the board of Trustees, and was a member of the Administrative Board. In 1970 he was chosen as Kiwanis' "Man of the Year" for his devotion to the community and church. Mr. Wells was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time at Lake Chatuge and Lake Santeelah. He was also a fox, dear and bear hunter. His loving devotion to his family and the care and concern which he always showed to others will always be a blessing to those who knew him. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Bonnie Murray Wells, who passed away in 1997; sons, Jimmy and Ted Wells; grandson, Pete "Pedie" Wells; and brothers, Millard "Bill" Wells, Reagan Wells, Garland Wells, Ben Wells, and Harley and Leander Wells. Surviving are his daughter, Bonnie Moon and her husband, Arthur, of Waynesville; sons, William "Bill" Wells and his wife, Carol, of North Wilkesboro and Southport and Ned Wells of Canton; sister-in-laws, Florence Wells and Mable Wells; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Longs United Methodist Cemetery.
