Topeka State Journal Tuesday 31 October, 1972, pg. 8: EMPORIA - Dr. J.J. Hovorka, 73, died here Monday in a hospital where he was admitted a few hours earlier after he was stricken at his home here. He was born July 1, 1899 at Wagner, SD and lived at Emporia since 1930. He was a physician and surgeon many years before he retired in 1969. He was graduated in 1922 from Creighton University at Omaha where he received his MD degree in 1924. He served an internship at St. Mary's Hospital at Kansas City and was a surgeon at the Hertzler Clinic at Halstead before he began practice at Emporia. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Dr. Hovorka was a member of Sacred heart Catholic Church, knight's of Columbus, the Rotary Club and Ball-McColm Post No. 5 of the American Legion all at Emporia. He was one of the original members of the William Allen White Memorial Foundation at Emporia. He was a fellow in the American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons and was a member of the American Medical Assn., and the Kansas Medical Society. He was married to Edmonia Lee Colvin July 12, 1928 at Hutchinson. She survives. Other survivors include 2 sons, John W. Hovorka, Oklahoma City, and Joe Hovorka, Topeka; 2 daughters, Mrs. Mary LeBlon, Nashville, Tenn., and Mrs. Sally Goodwin, St. Louis, ; and 11 grandchildren. Services will be Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery at Emporia. Rosary will be recited today at Blair Colonial Mortuary at Emporia.
