Originally interred in the Marui Cemetery, Niteroi, Brazil on November 21, 1943. His remains were later moved to the Fort Buchanan Cemetery, San Juan, Puerto Rico and then were later repatriated here on May 3, 1948.
Roland served as an Ensign, U.S. Navy during World War II. He resided in Lexington, Nebraska prior to the war. He was promoted to the rank of Ensign on December 22, 1942. Roland died in the "Line Of Duty" as a passenger on Naval Airplane R4D1, Bureau #01988, U.S. Navy when the plane crashed into the side of a mountain near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during the war. Service ID: 157779. The reason he is named on a group headstone is because when soldier's were killed in close proximity to each other they were unable, at that time, to identify them separately and interred their remains together in one grave. ~ News Article: San Antonio Express, San Antonia, Texas, Monday Morning, November 22, 1943, Front Page: Naval Plane Crashes, Kills 17 Americans WASHINGTON, Nov. 21--Sixteen navy officers and men were among the 18 persons killed in the crash of a large U.S. naval transport plane 30 miles east of Rio de Janeiro on Friday, the navy reported tonight. The other victims were an American civilian engineer and a Brazilian. The plane burst into flames after the crash, the navy reported, adding that the cause of the accident was not known. Previously it had been announced from Rio that the crash occurred while the plane was en route from Recife to Rio in a fog. Bodies of the 17 Americans were buried today in Marui Cemetery at Niteroi, in accordance with local laws, the navy said.
