Stephen Valcik, 75, Editor of Hospodar, published by the Cechoslovak Publishing Co., of West, the oldest Czech newspaper in the United States, died early Saturday at Methodist Hospital in Houston after a short illness. He died one day before he would have observed his 50th wedding anniversary. His duties as editor of Hospodar made him well known among Czechoslovakian immigrants and their children throughout the United States. Before learning English, Mr. Valcik attended Sam Houston State Teachers College at Huntsville and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with the help of an interpreter. While teaching school in Tavener (between Wharton and Rosenberg) he met a student, Helen Kodytek, who later became Mrs. Valcik. Their home was at 6402 Prague, Houston. Houstonians knew Valcik for his teaching Russian, Spanish and German at Kincaid School and Westchester High Schools. He was a retired Post Office employee. When Mr. Valcik was 45 years old, he entered the University of Houston where he earned a bachelor of science and master of psychology degrees. He was a member of the SPJST and was a Rosicrucian. He was a former editor of the Vestnik, serving in that capacity for 12 years. The Vestnik, the SPJST official newspaper, is also published at West. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Lt. Col. Stan Valcik of Midlothian, and John H. Valcik of Houston, a daughter, Mrs. Helen V. Schnell; three grandsons, and two granddaughters. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Heights Funeral Home Chapel in Houston. He was cremated. The West News, West, Texas, Volume 78, No. 11, Edition 1, Friday, July 5, 1968, Page 1
