James A. Maler of West, a McLennan County constable and West business owner, died Wednesday at an Arlington hospital. He was 51. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, the Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery near West. Monsignor George Doskocil will lead a rosary at 7 tonight at the church. Mr. Maler was born April 30, 1941, near Abbott, and attended Abbott schools. He married Elizabeth Jean Deiterman on Jan. 12, 1963, in West. Mr. Maler owned Maler's Texaco for 27 years and had been McLennan County constable for Precinct 3 the past eight years. Mr. Maler was a sponsor of Maler's Texaco Softball Team for many years. He joined the West Fire Department in May 1968 and had served as fire chief. He was an active member of the West Kiwanis Club, the Bellmead Lions Club, the SPJST Lodge, the West Longhorn Club, the West Fair and Rodeo Association, the McLennan County Peace Officers Association and the State Association of Peace Officers. Mr. Maler was a member and president of the Lake Park Association and a member and past director of the Central Texas Justice of the Peace and Constable Association and the West Chamber of Commerce. He also was an associate director of Westfest, Inc., a past reserve officer for the McLennan County Sheriff's Department and the West Police Department, and a charter member of the West Volunteer Ambulance Association. James was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, where he also was a Eucharistic minister. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Jean Maler; his father, Albert R. Maler of West; three sons, Michael Maler, David Maler and Kevin Maler, all of West; two daughters, Sharon Maler and Susan Maler, both of West; six brothers, Charles Maler of Aquilla, John Earl Maler, Joe Edd Maler and Jimmy Maler, all of West, Kenneth Maler of Whitney, and Jerry Maler of Arlington; four sisters, Beulah Zahirniak of West, Linda Whalen of Aqauilla, Beverly Keen of Arlington and Janet Patterson of Ross; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the West Volunteer Ambulance Association or the American Cancer Society. Aderhold Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
