NOTE: Birth/Death dates and locations are approximate and based on Census records. -------------------------------- He is my Great Great Grand Uncle, brother of my Great Great Grandfather, Alex McPhaul. Husband of Nancy Jane Clark Smith He is the son of John McPhaul (1790-1847) and ? Brother of: Archibald "Arch" McPhaul, Daniel McPhaul, Alexander "Alex" McPhaul, Flora McPhaul Blackwell, William McPhaul, Margaret Ann McPhaul Strickland, John McPhaul, James A. McPhaul and Mary Elizabeth McPhaul Thurman Based on Census records, he was born about 1832 in Florida, most likely Gadsden County. He is counted in the Gadsden County census in 1850 by name. (Description: line 29, dwelling 162, family 162; age 18; living with his 5 brothers after the death of their father.) He first appeared in in Gadsden County tax rolls in 1852 as the owner of a slave, and in 1855 through 1860 as owner of an 80 acre farm. He is first listed in Bastrop County Texas tax roll in 1859, declared a horse, and paid poll tax. He is listed in the Bastrop County census in 1860 (Description: Page 42, Dwelling 360, Family 323 Line 15; Camble McFall; age 26, laborer, living with Brother William) He enlisted in Co B, 4th Texas Infantry at Bastrop on 1 Apr 1862, and particiapted in the "Battle of 27 June 1862" in Virginia. He was hospitalized several times in Richmond, and in Georgia, and appeared on a list of rebel deserters who had "taken the oath" at Provost Marshal's office, Knoxville, Tennessee on 29 Jan 1864. He bought 100 acres from Jones and Sayers in Bastrop County in 1867, and married Nancy Jane CLARK Smith (born Jun 1835) on 19 Feb 1873. They had 2 children Eugenia McPhaul Young (born 4 Oct 1875) and Ezetta F. McPhaul (Born about 1879.) Both daughters are listed in the 1880 census in Bastrop County, Texas and Ezetta likely died shortly thereafter. She is presumed to be in the grave marked the "Dtr of Mr. & Mrs. Campbell McPhaul" Ridgeway Cemetery, Paige, Bastop County, Texas. The 1880 Census also list step son John Smith in the same household. From the Bastrop County tax rolls it is inferred that Campbell died in 1896; his wife is last listed on the 1900 Bastrop County census at 64, living with son John Smith and her daughter Eugenia (age 24.). Nancy probably died in 1910. --------------------------- This information is based on a manuscript written by my father, Dr. John J. McPhaul, Jr. It is entitled "An Indexed McPHAUL FAMILY REUNION: A Convocation of North American Scot Families 1755-1920 Volume 1, Second Edition". I would also like to thank my cousin, Marcella Chapple for her photo documentation of this cemetery as well John Lang for their tireless efforts in keeping this cemetery up to date and well documented.
