Services for Winnie Bethel Gee (Gee Gee), 9 l , were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. June 23, 1995, at Crews Funeral Home Chapel in Apache. Officiating was the Rev. Doyle Wilburn, pastor of First Baptist Church, Apache. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Apache, under the direction of Crews Funeral Home. Gee Gee died Tuesday, June 20, following a short illness. She was born in Corsicana, Texas, on Feb. 20, 1904, to Jesse Felt Griggs and Hattie Laverna Lyon Griggs. She moved with her farm, to Mangum, Oklahoma, at a young age. She spent her childhood and married life in Mangum, Anadarko and Broxton community, where she registered voters, wrote the community newspaper and cooked at Broxton Consolidated School. She worked with the Headstart Program after she and her family moved to Apache. Her greatest concern was for little children, for their safety and comfort. Gee Gee was known for her wonderful vegetable garden and her beautiful flowers. She was married to the late Oliver S. Gee, and they had six children. One son and her husband preceded her in death, as well as her parents, one brother, four sisters, one grandson, one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter. Gee Gee moved to the Benton and Shreveport, La. area after her husband's death in Nov., 1981. At the age of 88, she moved to the Evangeline Apartments on Line Ave., and lived alone there for 2- 1/2 years. She was very active in exercise class, Bible study and took two daily walks. She was known as "The Purple Lady" because everything she used and wore was purple. She kept up with current affairs by watching TV and reading her hometown newspaper. Gee Gee became ill in December, 1994, and had been living with a daughter near Cypress Lake until her death. She was a member of the Red River Baptist Church. Gee will be missed very much and is survived by: four daughters, Gerry Wheeler and her husband, Bill, of Shreveport, La., LaDean Kunze and her husband, Lawrence of Benton, La., Ottie Beth Yarbrough of Mobile, Ala., Glada Jo Kardokus of… (Crews Funeral Home obituary files)
