Mathews passed to his reward at 8:30 Tuesday morning. At his last birthday, in November, 1933, he was 81 years of age, at which time he was greeting his many friends with grateful, cheerful spirit and receiving their hearty congratulations. Mr. Mathews was born and reared near Milltown, in Chambers county, and moved to this community shortly after beginning married life. Since then he had been an honored and useful citizen and contributed no small part in the upbuilding of this town and community, materially as well as morally. He was firm in his convictions of what he believed to be right. He was a faithful member of the Baptist church through the years of his residence here, serving many years and until the time of his death as a member of the board of deacons. From the church he loved so well bis' body was borne Wednesday afternoon to its final rest in the city cemetery, after appropriate rites conducted by the pastor, Rev. T. E. Steely, assisted by Revs. D. C. McNutt and C. B. Holder. Mr. Mathews is survived by his second wife and by two children of the first marriage Mr. Thos. L. Mathews, of Springfield, and Mrs J. R. Newman, of LaFayette. Another son, J. D. Mathews, died in Columbus, Ga., November 11, 1933.
