Daily Tribune , October 1986 Football Injury Fatal For PHS Athlete Chris Loff Seventeen-year-old Christopher Arvid Loff, a senior at Palacios High School, died Saturday afternoon at Hermann Hospital in Houston after suffering a brain hemorrhage during Friday's varsity football game in Sweeny. Loff, who was a starting defensive cornerback and reserve quarterback for the Sharks, collapsed on the sideline early in the second half, and was initially taken for emergency treatment to Sweeny Community Hospital. He was then lifeflighted to Hermann Hospital in severe condition. The Palacios athlete was placed on life support systems in the early morning in an effort to sustain vital signs. He died at approximately 2:30 p. m. Saturday. His organs were donated for transplants. Palacios ISD superintendent Bill Reaves said that according to doctors at Hermann Hospital, the cause of death was due to a brain hemorrhage involving two blood vessels. Although Loff had suffered a head injury last season, Reaves said that doctors indicated that Friday's hemorrhaging was apparently not related to any previous injury. Reaves, who had been at Friday's game had gone to Hermann Hospital when the Palacios youth was lifeflighted, said he had remained in constant contact with both the physicians and the youth's family. He said he had requested that information to the press concerning the death be released through his office to avoid the emotional stress on students, teachers and the youth's family. "We don't know how or when it (the injury) occurred, we just don't know that for sure," Reaves commented. He said that the Shark coaches had viewed Friday's game films several times and were unable to see any play where Loff may have been injured. Coaches at Sweeny High School were also unable to detect any signs of any injury in their game film Reaves said that based on information he had received from coaches and others at the scene, Loff had come off the field shortly after the start of the third quarter and complained of extreme headaches. Reaves said the youth then collapsed on the sidelines. Although he was conscious briefly, the superintendent said Loff had fallen unconscious by the time emergency medical crews crossed the field. Loff was then taken across the field on a stretcher and rushed by ambulance to the Sweeny hospital. Reaves said that initial reports from the Sweeny hospital indicted that the youth had suffered a severe spinal cord injury, but those reports proved to be incorrect. He was then life flighted to Hermann Hospital were doctors told family and school officials that Loff had suffered a brain hemorrhage. He was placed on life support systems in the intensive care unit. The 17-year-old senior had received a head injury last season. Reaves, however said Hermann doctors told school coaches and Loff's family that there was apparently no relationship between the two injuries. Reaves said he has no information on the autopsy performed. Because of his previous injury, Reaves said, "everyone was very cautious about his playing this year." The youth was advised by his family and school officials to discontinue football after being sidelined for most of last season after having received a concussion. According to Reaves, Loff was adamant about playing this year and was allowed to do so after obtaining a doctor's release. Loff had played football since junior high school and also participated in high school baseball earlier in the year. Palacios Beacon , October 23, 1986
