Bio

John Clayton Stiff was born March 17 1846 in or near Hodgenville, LaRue, Kentucky to parents William B. Stiff and Rachel Ann Webb Stiff. J.C. Stiff ran a grocery store in Cedar County West Branch Township, Westside Park in Rochester Iowa. He married Margaret Clara Rachford Feb. 15 1866. John and Margaret had twelve children, eight sons and four daughters: James William b. 1867 m. Emma Louise Borschel, John Benjamin -1870, Robert Emmett b. 1870 m. Stella Bertha McLane, Henry Marshall b. 1871 m. Bertha Madin, Rose Merrill, Charles Franklin b. 1873 m. Margaret Stokes, Mytle Etter, 1st wife?, Anna Frances b. 1875 m. William Sheldon, Mary Margaret -1876, Ada Clematis b. 1878 m, James Rachford, Winfield Scott Finefield, Kathryn "Katie" Basheba b. 1880 m Philip Warren Christian, Peter Clayton "Dick"b. 1883 m Clara Buckman, Eddie Knox -1886, and Otto Clare b. 1887 m. Lola Madin. Johnny, Mary, and Eddie died in infancy. J.C and his wife came from Meade Kentucky to Iowa in 1877 and lived in Morse, Iowa until 1892 when they moved to Buchanan, Iowa and later Rochester, Iowa. JC was a member of the Baptist Church and later the United Christian Church. He was 88 years old at the time of his death. He is buried at Rochester Cemetery in Rochester, Iowa.
