CRESTON -- A. Edward "Ed" Brunken, 92, of Creston, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at the Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, in Creston, with Rev. Jim Ernst officiating. Private family interment of cremains will be in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in rural Leigh, prior to the service. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus. Memorials are suggested to the Creston Rescue Unit or the Creston Volunteer Fire Department. Ed was born February 7, 1921, in Creston, to William Sr. and Minnie (Husmann) Brunken. He graduated from Creston High School in 1939. He was a lifetime farmer on the Brunken home place southwest of Creston, until moving into Creston upon retirement. In October 2012, he made his home at the Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove. Ed married Maxine Mae Lueschen, on May 26, 1957, in rural Leigh. To this union three children were born, Jed, Amy and Sara. She died in 1983. Ed married Mary Anne McGee, on May 20, 1989, in Creston, bringing her adult children Robin, Shane, Randy and Holly into the family. She died in 2009. Ed was president of the Creston Rural Fire Board for 23 years, a member of the Creston Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years, and a charter member of the Creston Rescue Unit. He loved farming, playing cards and spending time at Alice's Cedar Inn enjoying his beer with friends. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church. Ed is survived by his son, Jed Brunken, of Columbus; daughter, Amy (Roy) Kranz, of Columbus; daughter, Sara (Don) Gilbreath, of Castle Rock, Colo.; grandchildren, Nikki (Ryan) Lickteig, Kylie (fiancé Garret Merrill) Kranz, Penny Kranz, Dan (Christine) Gilbreath, Hannah and Abby Gilbreath; great-grandson, Caden Lickteig; daughter, Robin Anderson, of Columbus; daughter, Shane (Jim) Hockett, of Shenandoah, Iowa; son, Randy (Robin) McGee, of Lakewood, Colo.; daughter, Holly Mencl, of Creston; grandchildren, David Anderson, Debra Seitner, Van Vohland, Josh Davis, Jimmie Hockett, Caitlin McGee, Ryanne Hofeling, Kendra Haffner, Shannon and Taylor Fittje; great-grandchildren, Megan, Laura, and Claire Anderson, Catherine and Ella Seitner, Allie Anderson, Trip, Keely, and Niaya Vohland, Scarlett, Legacy, Sky, and Josh Davis, Sofia Fittje; and sister-in-law, Evelyn Brunken, of Pasadena, Calif. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, William Sr. and Minnie Brunken; first wife, Maxine Brunken; second wife, Mary Anne Brunken; grandson, Timothy Gilbreath; granddaughter, Darci Anderson; brothers, Walter, William Jr., Fred, and Emil Brunken; sisters, Anna Brunken, Martha Kallweit, Elsie Scheffler, Minnie Hamburger, and Ruth Scheffler; and son-in-law, Rich Anderson.
