********************************************** Obituary Dan Crutchfield, native Texan and beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2002. Son of Mary Moss and Silas Martin Crutchfield, he was born the youngest of four boys on November 4, 1921 in Pearsall, Texas. As a young boy, he spent his summers in Cotulla, Texas with his best friend, Gus Ralph Hoff. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1940, he joined the 36th Field Artillery Unit of the National Guard. He trained in North Africa and participated in the taking of Solerno, earning a Bronze Star. After the war he attended St. Mary's University and joined the Union Stockyards in 1953, where he made many life-long friends. He retired as Vice President of the Stockyards in 1981, and was a Director Emeritus of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 61 years, Jean Cart Crutchfield; son Dan Evans Crutchfield and his wife, Rochelle Hoffman Crutchfield; granddaughter Elizabeth Crutchfield Okamura; and great-granddaughter Leah Elizabeth Okamura.
