US NAVY WORLD WAR II Obituary: PALESTINE HERALD-PRESS Palestine, Anderson Co., TX—Tuesday, 7 February 2006 Services for Elward B. Alford, 93, of Tyler [Smith Co.] are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at Stewart Family Funeral Chapel.... Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery under direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home, Tyler. Mr. Alford passed away Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, in Tyler. Elward was born to the late Lawrence Allen and Margaret Swanzy Alford on Oct. 29, 1912, in Shelbyville. He lived in the Tyler and Palestine area since the end of World War II. He proudly served as a sailor on the USS Lexington being one of the first sailors to enter Tokyo after World War II. During his career as School Superintendent of Westwood I.S.D., he saw it develop from a four room country school to a Class 3A school and always had a great affection for his students. After retirement, he became director of Trinity Valley Teachers Credit Union. He was a member of Noonday U.M.C. and past member of Holmes Chapel U.M.C. in Palestine. He served his community as city councilman in Palestine for three terms and mayor pro-tem one term. He was also a member of the Palestine Lions Club. Elward will be remembered for the service he gave his community and great love he had for his family. Elward is survived by his loving family including his daughters, Judith McDonald and husband Pace III of Palestine and Jo Quinata of Gresham; son, Kenny Alford and wife, Melinda of Lavon; seven grandchildren, Amanda Estes, Pace McDonald IV, Lorena Quinata, Matthew Quinata, Leilani Quinata, Noel Quinata, and Sarah Kate Alford; seven great-grandchildren; and dear friend, Ophelia Causey of Grand Saline. Pallbearers will be Kenny Alford, Matthew Quinata, Noel Quinata, Jack Estes, Pace McDonald III, and Pace McDonald IV....
