Hobbs News Sun Monday May 11, 1987 William Whelchel Rosary will be recited for William R. Whelchel of 1621 Denson at 7 p.m. today in the Griffin Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Helena's Catholic Church with Father John Curran officiating Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Born Oct. 10, 1922 in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, Whelchel died Saturday at St. Mary of the Plains Hospital in Lubbock. He was 64. Whelchel, a resident of Hobbs since 1949, served in the U.S. Army in World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his wife, Patricia of the home; five sons, Bill Whelchel, Richard Whelchel, John Whelchel and Stephen Whelchel all of Des Moines, Iowa; three daughters, Patti Ann Fort of Lovington, Anastasia Whelchel of Dallas and Julie Lemery of Hobbs; a sister, Frances Winchell of Perry, Iowa; and 13 grandchildren.
