Bio

Son of Mathias G. & Sophie (Hobza) Sladky. ∼ VALPARAISO – Mathias "Math" J. Sladky, 78, of Valparaiso, died June 9 at his home. Sladky was born on Sept. 12, 1930, to Mathias G. and Sophie (Hobza) Sladky in Wahoo. He attended St. Wences-laus School in Wahoo. He was a 20-year Military Veteran of the Army National Guard where he worked as an aircraft mechanic. He worked as an Aircraft Mechanic for the Nebraska State Patrol from 1975 until retiring in 1995. He was a polka bandleader for 57 years. Along with his wife, Dottie, he formed M&D Tour and Travel, which specialized in taking people to Czechoslovakia. He married Dorothy "Dottie" Skoda on Sept. 12, 1994 in Lincoln. He was a member of the Dwight American Legion 110, Wisconsin Polka Boosters, No. 1 Mid-Western Polka Club of Kansas, Oklahoma Polka Club, Czech Heritage Foundation, Inc. Math was inducted into the Omaha Sokol Polka Hall of Fame in 1987, the Milligan Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Chicago National IPA Polka Music Hall of Fame in 2005. He was a former first Vice President of the Lincoln Czech Club, a bandleader since 1952 and a musician since 1945. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife; son and daughter-in-law, Robert A. and Rosemary Sladky of Waverly; daughter and son-in-law, Edna Mae and Bill Fencl of Bruno; five granddaughters, three grandsons and 12 great-grandchildren; two step-sons, Leonard J. Pospisil Jr. and Lawrence and Kim Pospisil, both of Lincoln; several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Anthony Osmera of Weston; three brothers and sisters in law, Joe and Clarice Sladky of Omaha, Bernie and Emily Sladky of Wahoo and Richard and Linda Sladky of Omaha; many other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was held June 13 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo with Rev. Charles Town-send officiating. Casket bearers were John Fencl, Russell Sladky, Gerald Osmera, Donald Sladky, Allen Osmera and Edward Sladky. Honorary casket bearers were Steve Sladky, Ron Sladky, Mike Osmera, Matt Fencl, Peter Fencl, Ryan Pospisil, Corey Pospisil, Shawn Pospisil, Gwaine Dvorak, Frank Siedlik, Brad Husak and all musicians. Interment was at St. Francis Cemetery with military honors by the Dwight American Legion Post 110. Memorials in lieu of flowers memorials were given to the family for future designation. Svoboda Funeral Home of Wahoo was in charge of the arrangements.
