Son of George T. THOMPSON and Catherine F. SELLERS. Born January 26, 1858, in Iowa. John's father, George, drowned in the Platte River on March 8, 1859, when John was barely a year old. His mother, Catherine (Sellers) Thompson, remarried to Madison Sullivan on September 19, 1869, in Ringgold County, Iowa. John and his older brother, William Henry Thompson, remained with their paternal grandparents, Jesse and Jane (Dodson) Thompson, and were raised by them. Unknown when John came to Sunnyside though it was by 1920. In 1929, John had a 3 foot concrete wall constructed around the burial locations of a dozen or more family members in "Thompson Cemetery" in Ringgold County, Iowa, including the gravesites of his mother, father, paternal grandparents, and even his step-father. The "Thompson Cemetery" is present-day located in the midst of a bluegrass pasture. The gravesites enclosed with the 3 foot wall that John S. Thompson had constructed in 1929 are the only ones still in existence.
