Clyde Fleming of Benton died Friday, February 20, 2009. He was 94. He was born January 29, 1915, in Benton, Arkansas. Mr. Fleming was a life-long resident of Benton. He worked a short time at McCoy Couch Furniture Company, farmed, then began work for ALCOA in the early 1940s. He became a maintenance mechanic when Reynolds Metals began in Bauxite. He retired from Reynolds after 32 years. Mr. Fleming was active in his community and his church. He served as volunteer fireman and Boy Scout master. He is a former member of Benton Lion's Club and Golden K Kiwanis. He served as president of Golden K Kiwanis for several terms. He loved children and clowned for the Special Olympics. He gave programs in Benton Public School Classrooms telling them about bees and honey. He always kept bee hives, extracted and gave away his red clover honey. He was a member of First Baptist Church for over 60 years, sang with the Senior Adult Choir, and attended Sunday School until physically unable. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Lydia May Fleming, his wife of 65 years Charlotte Fleming, as well as nine siblings. Survivors include son Robert Fleming and wife Rita of Little Rock; daughter Anne Packebush and husband Danny of Portland, Texas; five grandchildren, Danny Packebush and wife Ashley of Cameron, Texas; Paul Packebush and wife Sherrill of Austin, Texas; Melodye Van Cleave and husband Bobby of Benton; Stephanie McBee of Benton; and Staff Sgt. Brett McBee currently stationed at Offutt AFB in Omaha, Nebraska; three great-grandchildren, Rebekah and Zac Van Cleave of Benton, and Conner Packebush of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by his brother John Fleming and his sister Mildred Prewitt both of Benton and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be: George Fleming, Rick Fleming, David Mason, John Prewitt, Ronnie Brown, Kyle Snyder, and Ralph Beaty. Members of James Herzfeld's Sunday School Class will serve as Honorary Pallbearers. Services will be held at First Baptist Church of Benton on Tuesday, February 24 at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery. The minister will be Dr. Rick Grant. Memorials may be made to the music ministry of First Baptist Church Benton. (from Ashby Funeral Home online obituary)
