James "Jim" Hill, 86, a loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009, in Dallas. Graveside service: 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Jim was born June 1, 1922, in Santa Anna to Mr. and Mrs. James J. Hill Sr. He lived most of his early life in Denton, where he attended high school. Jim joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and worked as a codebreaker until the end of World War II. He then attended North Texas State, where he graduated in 1949, earning a B.A. degree. He was recalled by the Navy and worked again as a codebreaker during the Korean War. He taught school in his early years, that continued a tradition started by his grandfather and father, who were also school teachers. Most of Jim's career was spent in insurance working with the Floyd West Agency in Fort Worth, and then with Crum and Forster in Fort Worth, before his retirement. He was the husband of Dodie Hill, of River Oaks, where they resided for the last 25 years. Jim loved all sports, especially the Mavericks, Texas Rangers and the Cowboys. He was a good golfer, a great bowler, played a mean game of checkers, and showed no mercy in dominoes. He will be missed by all who knew him. Jim was preceded in death by son, Mike Hill of Hamlin; and wife, Dodie Hill of River Oaks. Survivors: Stepdaughters, Janice Ashford and family, Sandra McCartney and family and Charla George and family; stepson, Jon Adams and family; son, Richard Hill; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and loved ones.
