Texas, S2, US Navy, World War II Billie Joe Long was born in Ballinger, Texas 9 Oct 1926, the third of five sons born to Andrew Jackson Long & Sallie Howell. He attended Ballinger Schools until 7th grade at which time he elected to start working. He enlisted in the Navy in San Antonio, Texas 27 Feb 1945 being assigned service number 9688427. He underwent basic training at San Diego, then was assigned service aboard the USS Grayson, USS Waller and USS Kimberly. He was honorably discharged 20 Aug 1946 at Camp Wallace Texas with a WWII Victory Medal. Returning home to Ballinger, he joined his father working on cotton gins. After the family relocated to San Angelo, he found employment with Shannon Hospital. Never marrying, he lived with his parents and cared for them until he passed 8 Dec 1971. He is interred in Evergreen Cemetery near his parents and brothers C.A. & Charles. ~ Compiled for publication in Vol. 6 of "Veterans of Runnels County" by Zebulon Long Obituary, SA Times: SAN ANGELO (Staff) - Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel for Billie Joe Long , 45, who died at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday in Shannon Hospital. Burial and graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery at Ballinger. Long, the brother of an Odessan, had lived in San Angelo for the past 20 years. He was a veteran of World War II and and a retired employee of the Shannon Hospital. He was a member of the First Church of God. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Long, Sr. of San Angelo; one sister, Sibyl Watkins of San Angelo; four brothers, Jack Long, Jr. of San Angelo, C. A. Long of Culver City, California, O. R. Long of Columbus, Ohio, and Charles Long of Odessa.
