DAVID CITY – William Fencl, Sr., 91, died May 11 at David Place in David City. Fencl was born Aug. 2, 1917, to Joseph and Therize (Rerucha) Fencl on the family farm in Saunders County. He attended school through the eighth grade. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked on the Burma Road and received the Overseas Service Bar, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European Campaign Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon. On Jan. 22, 1945, he married Margaret Lee in Omaha. He farmed in Saunders County his entire life and ran Marge's Bar in Bruno with his wife for 25 years. He resided at David Place for the past 14 years. He was a life member of the Brainard American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; five brothers, Adolph, John, Ed, Joe and Anton Fencl; three sisters, Gustie Svoboda, Tillie Simanek and Josephine Coufal; one son, Hammett Fencl and granddaughter, Denise Fencl. He is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Juanita Fuller of David City and Theresa and Kent Kavan of Dunbar; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Donna Fencl of Lufkin, Texas, A. Keith and Charlene Fencl of San Antonio, Texas, William Jr. and Edna Fencl of Bruno; daughter-in-law, Beverly Fencl of San Diego, Calif.; 19 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 15 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Bruno with Father Ron Homes officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 14 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and a rosary service at 7:30 p.m., all at Kracl Funeral Chapel in David City. Additional visitation will be held one hour prior to Mass on Friday at the church. Burial will be at the Prague National Cemetery with Military Graveside Honors.
