From the East Oregonian Nov 17, 2009 LEXINGTON - Charles W. McConnell, 82, of Lexington died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Lexington Community Bible Church in Lexington. Concluding service and burial will follow at the Lexington Cemetery. Mr. McConnell was born Nov. 11, 1927, in Dickinson, N.D., to Robert and Annie Shephard McConnell. He attended grade school at Webberville, Mich., and then high school at Clason, Mich. He joined the Navy in 1944, and was stationed at Great Lakes Navel Station near Chicago, Ill. He became a helmsman on the transport USS Titanium, and was honorably discharged in 1946. He attended the Wahpeton College of Electronics in 1947. He took his written exam and held the highest master electrical license at age 21. In 1957 he married Vivian V. Entzel at Golden Valley, N.D. The couple lived at Haladay, N.D., for several years and then moved to Dallesport, Wash. In 1964 they moved to Myrtle Creek, then Elgin before settling in Heppner in 1968. They moved to the Wallowa Valley for several years but returned to Heppner in 1983. His wife, Vivian, died in 1995. He later moved to Lexington. Mr. McConnell is survived by sons John McConnell of Heppner, Thomas McConnell of Saskatchewan, Canada, Richard McConnell of La Grande and James McConnell and Robert McConnell, both of Pendleton; daughters Cynthia Sumner of Lexington, Susan Hargrove of Cove and Kathleen Adams of Nampa, Idaho; brother John S. McConnell of San Antonio, Texas; sisters Rosemary Eckleberg of Haladay, N.D., and Ruth Ann Odren of Minneapolis, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his sister Gloria. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lexington Baptist Church, P.O. Box 561, Lexington, OR 97839.
