Bio

Died in Walthill, Thurston, Nebraska. Buried next to her maternal grandmother, Emma Robbins Young. No grave stone or marker. The Walthill Times Walthill, Thurston, Nebraska, Friday November 3, 1916 Page 1 Dorothy Shurtlieff Victim of Infantile Paralysis Schools Closed for Disinfection Last week the village was alarmed by the announcement that a severe case of infantile paralysis had appeared in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. F. Shurtlieff, who lives a short distance north of town, the victim being their little seven-year-old daughter, Dorothy Ann, a pupil of the second grade. The home was promptly placed in quarantine and the board of education promptly closed the schools for the rest of the week to give the building an immediate thorough disinfection. Dorothy first showed symptoms of illness on Saturday, Oct. 21, but the nature of the insidious disease was not recognized until paralysis occurred on Wednesday following, and death resulted just after midnight Sunday night, or at 12:25 a.m. Monday, Oct. 30, 1916. Dorothy was born in Wayne county August 4, 1909, but has lived here since her parents moved here in March, 1915. She was a bright, loving little girl, very dear to her parents, and she was making rapid progress in her school work. Last year her teacher recommended her promotion to the second grade before the year was up, but Dorothy did not want to leave her teacher, otherwise she would have been in the third grade this fall. She was a member of the Methodist church and very fond of her Sunday school work. The funeral was held Monday afternoon. Owing to the quarantine the members of the family were not permitted to attend, but loving friends called at the home and carried the casket to the cemetery, where a simple service was conducted by Rev. J.H. Hard, who was the child's pastor. Universal sympathy has been expressed throughout the community with the grief-stricken parents in the suffering and death of their child. Card of Thanks We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all those who sent flowers and letters and cards of cheer and sympathy during the sickness and following the death of our little Dorothy. To our pastor and sympathetic friends who gathered around the little grave and gave her Christian burial, we thank you in the deepest gratitude of our hearts to Dr. Lemburg and Clyde Stewart. We extend our thanks and gratitude for their great care and attention. To the Ladies' aid for their thoughtfulness and help, which was truly appreciated. Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Shurtlieff and family The Tabor Beacon January 22, 1920 The body of the seven-year-old daughter of Charlie Shurtliff of Walthill, Nebraska, was brought to Tabor last week and buried in the cemetery here.
