Jacob was born in Dehtare, in southern Bohemia, and immigrated in 1870. He lived in Calmar, Iowa before moving to Park River, North Dakota where he was a very successful businessman, and president of the Bank of Park River. Very early he Americanized his surname to Birder. He was active in politics of the Democratic Party, lost election to the North Dakota constitutional convention in 1896 and for state treasurer in 1900. He was killed in a train wreck at Litchfield, Illinois when on his way to the Democratic National Convention in St. Louis. His widow, Minnie O'Reilly Birder, remained in their "magnificent" home, called Rosedale, in Park River.
