Yarmilla "Yarus" Anna Franko, 84, died Monday, April 27, 2009. Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Yarmilla Ann was born Feb. 19, 1925, in Plzen, Czechoslovakia, where she received her education. She taught home economics for several years in Prague before meeting the love of her life, Edmund Michael Franko, at a street dance arranged for American soldiers in Plzen. Yarus came to the United States in 1948 and she and Edmund were married on Veteran's Day, Nov. 11, of that year. She was the first native-born Czechoslovakian to be married in the new St. Thomas Catholic Church, a Czech community, and the event was recorded in the newspaper by a young reporter named Bobbie Wygant. Yarus had been a member of St. Thomas since she was married there 60 years ago. In the past, she and her husband were active in Lodge 92, SPJST. She was an exceptional artist, a loving wife and a wonderful mother. Yarus was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund; sons, Michael, Matthew and Mark; brother, Vaslav Vit; and sister, Vlostina Duha. Survivors: Children, Patrick, Timothy and his wife, Charlene, Paul and his wife, Carrie, and Barbara and her husband, Todd Dalton; grandchildren, Adrian Lee, Jennifer Underwood, Jack Underwood II, Dustin Underwood, Leslie, Christopher, Michael and Charles Franko; great-grandchildren, Claire and Jack Lee; and nieces and nephews.
