Bio

J. M. Burgess, a resident of Wheeler County since 1908, passed away at his home here early Wednesday morning. Mr. Burgess had been in ill health since the time he retired from his shoe repair business some few months ago but had not been critically ill the past few days. Mr. Burgess came to this area as a farmer, but went into the building business a few years after coming to Wheeler County and built or helped to build many of the early day homes in Wheeler and this area. Funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist Church here, where he was a devout member, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. E. Douglas Carver, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Pampa, a nephew of Mr. Burgess, officiated and was assisted by Rev. M.B. Smith, pastor of the Wheeler Church, and Judge A.C. Wood. Interment was in the Wheeler Cemetery with Kirk-Mason Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Burgess was born in Hood County, Texas on October 9, 1879 and passed away at his home in Wheeler on November 4, 1952, at the age of 73 years and 25 days. Survivors include the wife, Mrs. J.M. Burgess, four sons, Barney Burgess of Wheeler, Bailey Burgess of Houston, and Maurice and Watson Burgess both of Wheeler; one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Mae Crone of Winston, Mo.; one half brother, Troy Burgess of Canyon; one half sister, Mrs. Lula Loftin of Rogers, Arkansas; three step-sons, J.C Bowerman of Amarillo, V.H. Bowerman of Kingman, Arizona, and O.L. Bowerman of Wheeler; 14 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. His first wife, one daughter, two half brothers and one half sister preceded him in death.
