County women miss two disasters only to be in car crash Accident north of Summerdale during heavy rain Saturday leaves two dead By Jean-Marie McDonnell, Associate Editor SUMMERDALE—Two sisters were spared from disaster twice during a 3,500 mile trip to Canada, only to be in a car wreck that injured one and killed the other as well as her mother Saturday. The accident, which is still being investigated by the Alabama State Highway Patrol, occurred at 11:40 a.m. Saturday on Highway 59 a half mile north of Summerdale during a heavy rain storm. Elsie H. Malone, 70, of Seminole and her daughter Eulene Petelinski, 48, of Robertsdale both died after the accident. Oma Jean ‘Kitty' Mitchell, 54, of Seminole, who was driving the car, a 1986 Ford, was in serious, but stable condition at West Florida Regional Medical Center Tuesday afternoon. Her car collided with a 1988 Jeep driven by Billy C. Daniels, 57, of Mobile. He was treated and released at Providence Hospital in Mobile. Billy Daniels, 14, a passenger in Daniels' car, was treated and released from South Baldwin Hospital in Foley. Another passenger Jeanette Daniels, 40, was taken to Providence Hospital in Mobile, according to South Baldwin Hospital, but she was not listed as a patient there. Petelinski and Mitchell, who are sisters, escaped disaster twice in late September. They left for a 12-day Amtrak trip to Canada Sept. 15 and passed through the countryside Hurricane Hugo devastated a week later. They returned on the Crescent Sept. 17. The next evening, the Crescent derailed in Virginia when it hit a fire truck. Two firemen were killed and more than 150 people were injured. Steve Brooks, president of the Travel Merchant in Foley escorted the tour said they had rejoiced that they had not been on that train. "When we heard of this we celebrated. We felt "pretty lucky," he said. They would have been in the dining room at the time the accident occurred. The Baldwin County women were returning from Foley to pay for a side trip the sisters had taken to Niagra Falls when the car wreck occurred.
