Admitted 1/30/1885 Tarrant County
Rufus was the son of John Lindsay and his second wife Nancy Walker. Nancy was John Lindsay's second wife, and her younger sister Frances Maria Walker married John's son from his first marriage to Martha Ledford, Noah C. Lindsay. Nancy and Frances Maria "F.M." are sometimes conflated, but they are two different people. Both families moved to Titus Co., TX before 1860. Noah and FM appear on the census there (Rufus was not their son). John Lindsay died in 1855 and Nancy Walker remarried to James Wright, thus Rufus appears on the 1860 census in Titus Co. in the Wright household with his mother and step-father, and his Lindsay siblings. Rufus married Cathrine Isabeel "Belle" Moon and had three children, but tragedy followed him. Nancy and James Wright were separated in 1880. James Wright was in Morris Co., TX with his daughter Martha Wilder, while Nancy was living in Tarrant County with their daughter Rachel Victoria Wright Cooke. Nancy and James would later be living together in 1884 in Fort Worth, when in an apparent drunken state, and after an argument with his stepfather the prior day, Rufus shot and killed James Wright, and in the fray also killed his younger half-sister Franny Wright. Rufus fled, but was later apprehended and spent out his life in a mental asylum, where he died in 1910. His wife remarried to William B. Millsap
