Bio

Raymond D. Pestal, age 89 of Wahoo, died Thursday January 20, 2005 at the Saunders County Hospital. He was born November 23, 1915 on a farm near Weston, NE to Anton and Mary (Cejka) Pestal. He grew up on his familyís farm and graduated from Weston High School. He entered the United States Army in 1942 and attained the rank of Master Sargeant. Ray was stationed in Australia, the South Pacific and Japan. He watched from shore the signing, aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, of the proclamation which signaled the end of World War II. On December 19, 1948, he married Georgia Ruzicka in Wahoo. The couple just celebrated 56 years of marriage last month. Ray farmed his entire life until he retired in 1965. He was known for his expertise raising hogs. He also raised a few cattle. Ray enjoyed helping his son, Dan, with his hobby of raising poultry including peacocks and other exotic birds. Ray built the fly pens that Dan needed to house the birds. He is remembered as a hardworking, honest and generous man who taught Sunday school, was an Elder at the Czech Presbyterian Church, and at one time was the church treasurer. He had also served on the District 44 School Board, and was active for many years in the Mariners, a coupleís group at his church. He was a member of Malmo American Legion Post #232. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Dr. Daniel Pestal, and brother George Pestal. He is survived by his wife Georgia of Wahoo and sister Margaret Colwill of Omaha. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday January 24 at the Czech Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Lonnie Eschliman officiating. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Reuben Caha, Clarence Pestal, and Elmer Pestal. Serving as Active Casket Bearers will be Thomas Trutna, Donald Proett, Kenneth Pestal, Lyle Hayek, Timothy Hays, and LaVern Fortek. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday 2-7 p.m. at the Pruss-Nabity Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Czech Presbyterian Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by Malmo American Legion Post #232. Memorials may be made to the Czech Presbyterian Church.
