Jacob T Harkey Military • Arkansas, Civil War Service Records of Union Soldiers, 1861-1865 Mrs. T. J. Brumley and family were called to Lancaster early last week to attend the bedside of her father, Uncle Jake Harkey, who was taken suddenly ill. Uncle Jake passed away on the morning of the 14th and burial took place the following day. During the past several years Mr. Harkey was a frequent visitor in Grand Prairie, and he had a number of friends who are pained to learn of his death. The Lancaster Herald, in reporting his death said: "Uncle Jake Harkey, one of the most loveable characters who ever lived in Lancaster, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. B. Bandy in the early morning of February 14th, 1934. Uncle Jake reached the ripe old age of 85 years, 11 month and 14 days. He was born on February 19th, 1849 and when the tosic of war came he was a young man and during the last two years of that conflict he served with honor and distinction on the Federal side. He is the last of the soldier residing in this community who served on the Federal side. Jacob Taylor Harkey was born at Russellville, Ark. He continued to live in Arkansas until 1876, the year Texas adopted her constitution, and then moved to Texas. In Texas he settled near where Rocket now stands in Ellis County, but there was no Rockett then. He and his growing family lived there until 1900 and then moved to a farm down on Bear Creek, about four miles from Lancaster. He lived there for four years and in 1904 he and his family moved to Lancaster. Since 1904 he has been a resident of Lancaster and frequently seen on the streets where he was always welcomed by his multitude of friends who now miss him. His helpmate died in 1928, but during the long and useful life of this couple, eleven children were born. Eight of that number survive and are present at the funeral today. They are Mrs. T. J. Brumley of Grand Prairie; Dave Harkey of Lancaster; Mrs. A. B. Russell of Red Oak; C. H. Harkey of Handley; L. Z. Harkey of Anglean; Mrs. R. G. Warren of Lancaster; Mrs. W. B. Bandy of Lancaster and Mrs. Houston Jolley of Rockett. Uncle Jake was a consistent and devoted member of the Christian Church. He was a true Bible student and dearly loved to elucidate the Bible passages which treasured so greatly. From this beloved church he was today laid to rest with fitting ceremonies, honoring this great and good man who has gone to his reward with honor. Interment was in Edgwoad Cemetery.
