MR. AND MRS. WILBER BURDETTE WILLIAMS Mr. Williams was born April 15, 1888 in Thayre County, Nebraska, the second child of frontier parents; the father coming to that locality when it was held by the Indians. His father homesteaded land and drove a stage coach on route going west toward Colorado. Their land later became the townsite of Belvidere, Nebraska. In 1900 Mr. Williams came with his parents to Chambers County, Texas to the town of Anahuac. Not having public schools he attended a subscription school held in the famous old "General Chambers" house. In 1902 he began work as an apprentice carpenter. He also worked as journeyman carpenter in several places in Texas, coming to Cross Plains in 1910 just before the coming of the railroad. Mr. Williams helped construct the original store buildings in the townsite of Cross Plains and many residences. He opened his planing mill in 1916 and operated the business through the intervening 54 years. Wilber Williams was married to Carrie Belle Tyson at the home of Dr. and Mrs. John Tyson December 25, 1913. Survivors were their four children: Mrs. Alice Burdette Galloway, Miss Ida Nell Williams, Mrs. Emma Jane Hopson, Mr. Wilber Roger Williams, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
