Nyla Rose Richey Foreman, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2009 in Lake Charles. She was born to Daniel Wesley Richey, Sr. and Theodocia Josephine Hodges Richey on April 23, 1931, in Ragley, Louisiana. Nyla Rose was one of twelve children born into this family. She graduated from Ragley High School in 1948 as valedictorian and received the American Legion Award. She was awarded several college scholarships and attended McNeese Junior College. She earned her bachelor's degree in Home Economics and a minor in Science from South Louisiana Institute, which is now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She earned a Master's of Education degree in Administration and Supervision from McNeese State University. She was a teacher in Calcasieu Parish and Hardin County (Texas) for a total of 31 years. She taught home economics and science. While at McNeese Junior College, she was the 1950 Homecoming Queen and she was on the Miss McNeese Court for two years. She played basketball at Ragley High School and also at McNeese Junior College for one year. She has served as president of the McNeese Home Economics Association and served as president of the Southwest Louisiana Home Economics Association. She was a member of the teacher's organization Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was named the Southwest Louisiana Teacher of the Year by the Southwest Louisiana Home Economics Society. She was active in several home economics associations. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school and preschool at Simpson United Methodist Church in Lake Charles, was a youth director at Kountz (Texas) United Methodist Church and has served as the Outreach Committee Chairman at Squyres United Methodist Church in Ragley. She has also served her church as a vacation bible school teacher and a children's coordinator, and has been a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild, the United Methodist Women, the Worship Committee, the Growth and Vision Committee, the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, the Administrative Council, the Counsel on Ministries and bible studies. She was a founding member of the Ragley Historical Society. Her hobbies included playing the piano, cooking, reading and spending time with her grandchildren. Nyla Rose married in 1953 to college sweetheart Alvin "Bee" Foreman and they were blessed with three children, Mary Jo Foreman Bittner and husband Robert of Naples, Florida, David Alan Foreman and wife Wendy of Lake Charles and Ginger Ann Foreman Ieyoub and husband Mark of Lake Charles. She was preceeded in death by her husband; her parents; her siblings, Daniel Wesley Richey, Jr., Forest Richey, Noyes Richey, Verne Richey, Gladys Richey, Mildred Joffrion, and Carmel Estaville, two infant siblings, Winston and Theodocia; and by granddaughter Lindsey Michelle Bittner. She is survived by her three children; two sisters, Wava Reigel of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Laura Hunt of Ragley; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by grandchildren, Ashley Bittner of New York City, Lauren Bittner of Gainsville, Florida, Pierce Bittner of Naples, Florida, Brittany Foreman, Zachary Foreman, Natalie Ieyoub, Jacob Ieyoub and Luke Ieyoub and great-grandson Bryson "Lil' Bee" Foreman, all of Lake Charles. Visitation will be at Johnson?s Funeral Home from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Saturday and also at Squyres United Methodist Church in Ragley 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Sunday. The funeral service will be held at Squyres United Methodist Church at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 22, 2009. Pastor Juan Huertas will officiate. Burial will be at Magnolia Cemetery in Ragley, Louisiana.
