Bio
John Reid Jr. retired as Deputy Clerk of the Boone Co. District Court the end of 1954 after 48 years in the courthouse because of sickness . He moved with his parents from Arnot, Pa. at the age of one. They located South of Fort Dodge in 1875 in Coalville, Iowa. John left school at the age of 12 to become a coal miner. The family moved from Coalville to Frazer in 1896 where. John worked as a bookkeeper for a mining company. In March of 1898 John with a friend hiked to Webster City and enlisted in the army to serve in the Spanish American War. The man who swore him in was T. J. Mahoney, a prominent senior member of the bar and a life long friend. John's company was stationed in Chattanooga, TN in training. Many died of the fever and John helped others who were sick. He mustered out of service in October 1898 in Des Moines, Iowa with Andrew Fairgrave, the brother of Anna Fairgrave. John moved to Boonesboro (now Boone) in 1900. In the same year he married Anna Fairgrave from Valley Junction. After her death in 1940, he married Estelle Richardson Harris in 1945 and after the death of "Grace" he married Daisy Richardson DeHaven in 1949. John started his career in the courthouse as a bailiff under Sheriff Willard Foster, Dec. 15, 1906. He became a deputy in 1907 . John was elected to the office of Sheriff in 1910 and served for six years. He returned to the post of deputy sheriff 1917 to 1927. He resigned as deputy sheriff and became deputy clerk of court in March 1927. He continued in that post for the next 27 years until he resigned late in 1954 because of illness. He was a member of the Eddie Nelson Post of the Spanish American War Veterans, the Za Ga SIG Temple, the Elks club, the Royal Arch Masons, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Mt. Olive Lodge No. 79 A. F. and A. M. He was born in Tioga County, Pa. and was baptized as a baby in the Presbyterian church there. He had a life-long interest in the church and all community and civic affairs. His funeral service was held in the Baptist church and both Masonic and Military rites were observed at his burial.
