Bio

Hugh Wilburn Campbell 1923-2009 SHERMAN - Hugh Wilburn Campbell died March 9, 2009, at Wilson N. Jones Medical Center in Sherman following a short but fiercely fought struggle. Family visitation will be from 7 - 9 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at Dannel Funeral Home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 13, at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sherman. Interment will follow at West Hill Cemetery. Hugh was born March 5, 1923, in Sherman, the eldest child of Hugh and Maud Blackwell Campbell. The family briefly lived in Pueblo, Colo., before returning to Sherman to rear six children. From 7 -19 years old, Hugh lived with his family in the farm home of Woodman Circle Home where his father was the farm manager, in charge of the production of food, animals, acreage, and buildings for the operation from its initial building stage. Hugh graduated from Sherman High School in 1940, riding the bus to Sherman schools with his siblings and the orphaned children of the Home who were his extended family. He and his family were important not only to the operation of the Home but to the widows and children who resided there. Upon graduation Hugh worked for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers in an administrative capacity during the construction of Perrin Air Force Base and later Camp Maxey and Cox Field in Paris. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1943 and served in the European Theater flying the C-47. He was assigned to the 73rd Squadron, 434th Troop Carrier Group, 9th Air Force towing gliders into German territory after having been trained in the CGA Waco Combat Glider. He and his plane ferried troops, supplies, and tanks to Gen. George Patton's Army at the front. He participated in Operation Market Garden, the battles at Arnhem and Bastogne, flying off of an airstrip near Reims, France, that had been temporarily constructed to support the airborne missions. Coming home, following his military service, he met Nelda Forrest on Wall Street in Sherman. His children believe he must have had his uniform on, because she consented to marriage after five happy months. They married on Feb. 22, 1946 and have celebrated 63 years of marriage. Hugh attended Austin College and began a career in accounting and finance. He worked at Birge Food Company before he started with Sherman Savings and Loan in 1955 as secretary-treasurer. He eventually moved into the position of President. In 1965 he was hired as vice president at Merchants and Planters National Bank to head up the newly burgeoning real estate loan operation. During these years, Hugh was active in the business and community life of Sherman. He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, and the Little League Baseball Association. He also served on the Boards of Sherman Youth Center and Salvation Army. He chaired community fundraising efforts for Austin College and United Way at various times during the years. He devoted his business expertise and community leadership to the efforts of the Sherman Chamber of Commerce in the 1960s and 1970s, bringing new industries to Sherman which resulted in the broadening of its economic base. He was a member of Central Christian Church from 1946 -1992, serving as deacon, elder, treasurer, trustee, and Board Chair. In 1992 he joined Covenant Presbyterian Church and continued to be active in that congregation. Hugh was a family man, coaching Little League baseball, enjoying family vacation times and celebrations, and always following his children and grandchildren's lives with pride. Hugh loved his friends, actively competed at his hobbies of golf and bridge, traveled and camped all over the United States, and in the last years cherished the camaraderie of his coffee club. He was highly respected by the community and was also a renowned storyteller and chili maker. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Maud Blackwell Campbell; his brother, Jack M. Campbell; and sister, Helen Campbell Allison. He is survived by his wife, Nelda Forrest Campbell of Sherman; son Ronald Hugh Campbell and wife Jeri of Austin; daughter Sarah Campbell Stevens of Sherman; grandson Kendall Brent Campbell and wife Susan of Round Rock; granddaughters Sally Stevens Humphrey and husband John of Gainesville, Florida, and Susannah Stevens Barton and husband Kevin of Buffalo, N.Y.; great-grandchildren Isaiah Zachary Campbell and John David Campbell of Round Rock, Campbell Elizabeth Humphrey and Thomas Andrew Humphrey, of Gainesville, Fla.; sisters Genelle Campbell of Sherman, Betty Vinson and husband Ray of Conroe, and Carol Newsom and husband Don of McKinney; and many loved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
