Bio

Lawrence Journal World Fri. June 2, 1928 Pg. 6 Samuel Louis Eberhart was born on the old Eberhart homestead at Pleasant Grove in Douglas county, August 2, 1858, being 69 years, 9 months and 5 days old at the time of his death, which occurred at La Junta, Colo. May 9, 1928. He was the son of Henry S. and Eliza Eberhart who came to Kansas from the state of Pennsylvania in March 1854. He was the oldest son and the second child in a family of eight children of which two, one brother and one sister, have preceded him in death. He came from a long line of sturdy ancestors who emigrated from Germany in the year 1727, seeking religious liberty and a home for future generations. He grew to manhood on his father's farm where as soon as he was old enough to be of assistance, he aided the parents in the task of clearing the land, and helping them make a home for them in their old age. At Lawrence, September 7, 1887, he was married to Nettie M. Painter. To them were born four children, three of whom are still living. One son, Paul, died when four years old. He was reared in the Lutheran faith, but in the later years became a member of te Methodist church, which membership he held at the time of his death, but being far removed from a church of that denomination for some years, his funeral services were held at the Mennonite church near his home in charge of the Rev. A. M. Leatherman, pastor. The large number of friends and neighbors who came to pay their respects testified to the love and eteem in which he was held in the community where he lived. He was a member of the M. W. A., becoming a member of that fraternal order in 1901 at South Lawrence Camp 8357. Selfishness, resentment of false pride found no harbor in his heart. A quiet, kindly man, a true neighbor and friend. He life was dedicated to generosity, service, and love for his family. He is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter, Arlie W. of the home, Kenneth S. of Great Falls, Mont., and Mrs. Eleanor Hansen of La Junta, and one grandson, also one brother, N. A. Eberhart of Pleasant Grove, four sisters, Mrs. Sarah Pugh and Mrs. Emma Gimlett, Lawrence, Mrs. I. C. Milyard of Alamosa, Colo., and Mrs. C. F. Ulrich of Livingstone, Calif. He was laid to rest in the family lot in the cemetery at Sugar City, beside the little son who had gone on so long before him.
