"Rites Friday For Dr. A. J. Pope. Dr Andrew Jackson Pope, 84, longtime Abilene physician of 1837 S. 7th, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Elliott's Chapel of Memories. Officiating will be Don Morris, President of Abilene Christian College. Burial will be in the Oddfellows Cemetery. Dr. Pope died Wednesday of an apparent stroke. He was the father of Texas Supreme Court Justice Jack Pope. He was born Decemer 9, 1880, in Leona community in Leon County. In 1898 he attended Burnetta College in Venus, Johnson County, and then old Fort Worth University and Southwestern University at Georgetown. Dr. Pope came to Abilene in 1907 after completing medical school at Galveston and was the physician for Texas & Pacific Railroad until he retired in 1958. He did general practice in and around Abilene in the horse and buggy days, moving into the Model "T" stage in 1914. He had offices in the Mims building. He was an examiner for several life insurance companies, and was a member of local, state and national medical associations. He belonged to the Elks Lodge. He was a member of the Vine St. Church of Christ. He married Ruth A. Taylor in February, 1908, in Abilene. She died in 1957. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Bill Horton of 825 Vine; three sons, Judge Jack Pope of Austin, Baylis Pope of San Angelo, and Bill Pope of Cross Plains; a half-sister, Mrs. Agnew Haynes of Corpus Christi; two nieces and nephews; and 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren."
