Bio

Nancy Gayle Painter Nancy Gayle Painter was born in Mercedes, Texas, May 18, 1950, to Joyce and Bill Dooley. She loved children, her dogs, her family and her countless friends. Charity work was her passion: stirring the pot for Meals-On-Wheels, working at Habitat For Humanity, driving Dr. Woody (medical dog) to Children's Hospital of Austin, and giving her heart to the children and their families at Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation. Nancy's credo came from Charles Dickens', A Christmas Carol: "I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year." Nancy's favorite Christmas celebration was caroling at East Austin nursing homes with close friends for over twenty years. Barton's, Dan's Hamburgers and the slots in Vegas gives a glimpse into her life. We will miss her funny, irreverent and unflappable spirit. Her career as an R.N. began over thirty years ago at Brackenridge Hospital ICU and ended with pediatric nursing at Austin Radiological Association. As she ended her day she'd wave goodbye giving voice to the words of Groucho Marx, "This has all been wonderful, but I must be going." Nancy is preceded in death by her parents and Pongo, and she is survived by Stinky Lee, Doc and Rocky, her brother Bill and his wife Eva and their children, Tina, Angie, and Chris and his wife Karen and their son Micah Thomas Dooley. You are invited to celebrate Nancy's life Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Harrell Funeral Home. Service will be at 9:00 a.m. Saturday July 16th, at Harrell Funeral Home, with burial at 2:00 p.m. in San Antonio at Mission Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Children's Hospital of Austin. "There is nothing which can be called right or wrong." Wild Strawberries, 1957.
