Bio

John S. Hopper was born in Henderson County TN about 1826. He was the husband of Rachel Emeline Emerson and they were the parents of nine children. They resided in Calhoun County Arkansas. John S. Hopper conscripted as a Private in Company I, 3rd Regiment of the Arkansas Infantry on March 11, 1863 in Camden, AR. On September 20, 1863, he was wounded and taken prisoner at Chickamauga, Walker County, Georgia. He was then sent as a prisoner of war to the Military Prison in Louisville, KY. On October 2, 1863, he was transfered to Camp Douglass, Illinois, where he died on December 26, 1863. The cause of death was Tuberculosis. John was buried in Chicago City Cemetery in Grave # 932. All Conferates buried in Chicago City Cemetery were re-interred in "The Oak Woods Cemetery" about five miles south of Camp Douglas in 1867. John S. Hopper's name appears as John S. Harper on the Roster located at base of the 46 ft monument. Because of poor record keeping and missing records only 4,200 names are on the memorial but 6,000 coffins were interred.
