Bio

Adolph Joe Kohut, or "Shorty" Kohut as he was called by his friends, was born on May 14, 1894, in Texas. He was the first generation of his family to be born in the United States. His parents Joseph and Rose Saboda Kohut were both born in Czechoslovakia and came to the States in 1887. Shorty was a World War I veteran. After his military service was over, he had jobs where he could mostly work outside. In 1920 he was a stockman in Grawood, Colorado County, Texas, while his widowed mother worked as a dressmaker and reared his younger sister Mollie. After Mollie's marriage to Robert Svododa, Shorty's mother went to live with her and her growing family in Austin, Texas. Shorty took a job in construction which was an industry that he stayed in the rest of his life. Shorty married Pezzie Wimberley whom he probably met in San Marcos. She was from a large Hays County family, and he enjoyed being with her siblings. He had two sons Kenneth and Lester. In his 60's Shorty began to suffer from a number of illnesses including cancer and heart disease. He died of a pulmonary edema when he was 67 on March 27, 1962, at the Brooke General Hospital in San Antonio. He was buried in the San Marcos Cemetery. Pezzie died 35 years later and was buried beside him.
