THE PARIS MORNING NEWS, Thursday, August 29, 1929, p. 1: 'J. W. Cochran, 87 years old, was found dead in his bed Wednesday morning at his home at Powderly. Mr. Cochran had lived in the Powderly community for 32 years. He was a Confederate veteran and was well known over Lamar county. Mr. Cochran was a widower, his wife having died in 1923. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Baptist church at Powderly, conducted by the Rev. N. C. Walters, assisted by the Rev. S. S. Crain. Surviving are two sons, J. D. Cochran and S. O. Cochran, both of Powderly, and one daughter, Mrs. Laura Downey of Tulsa, Okla. Pallbearers will be W. T. Woody, Sam Chisum, C. M. Bolinger, Ed Griffin, W. D. Spalding and H. B. Gordon.' THE PARIS WEEKLY NEWS, Thursday, Sept. 13, 1923: He appears on the current roster of members of the Albert Sidney Johnston Camp, United Confederate Veterans, listed as having served but no rank or regiment.
