Bio

Minister and educator. He entered the teaching profession following graduation from high school. He attended Texas Christian University; received B. A. and M. A. from College of the Bible, and Harvard University (Who's Who in Churches of Christ by John T. Brown.) He served as minister of churches in Marfa, Weatherford, and Sweetwater, all in Texas; Seventeenth Street church, Nashville; and Harriman, Tenn. Also as president of Milligan College and Randolph Junior College. He was known as a great Bible preacher and was well versed in principles of the Restoration movement. It is estimated that he baptized seven thousand persons. Survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughters: Mrs. Florence Orbaugh, Mrs. F. M. Ragsdale, Mrs. Richard Allison, Mrs. A. K. Moe, Mrs. Russell B. T. McKissick of Abilene passed away Friday night at his home there. Funeral Services were held Monday Morning in Abilene. The deceased is the father of Dr. Charles McKissick of this city. -Mckinney Daily Courier-Gazette, 18 Nov 1957, pg 8 Dr. McKissick, Longtime Minister, Educator, Dies Dr. J. T. McKissick, 83, longtime Christian Church minister and educator, died at his home 3326 Parkcrest Dr., Friday at 7:15 p.m. He had lived in Abilene since 1941. He had been bedfast since suffering a stroke Jan. 17. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Elliott's Funeral Home. Dr. McKissick had served as a college president, Tennessee state secretary for the Christian Church and well-known evangelist during his 60-year ministry. Born in Maury County, Tenn., in 1874, he entered the teaching profession after graduation from high school. He later moved to Italy, Tex., where he worked for an oil mill and on a farm and received his BS degree from a college in Italy. He pastored several small churches, moving about 1899 to the First Christian Church in Marfa. He returned to Tennessee that year and was married to the former Elizabeth J. Murphy June 21, 1899. After serving as minister at Weatherford, Dr. McKissick returned to school and received his MA degree at Baylor University, classical diploma at a college in Lexington, Ky., and his BD at Harvard in Cambridge, Mass., in 1905. He served as state secretary of the Christian Church in Tennessee for four years and then accepted the presidency of Milligan College in his home state. Later, after a second tenure at Marfa, he became president of the old Randolph Junior College at Midland and went with the college when it moved to Cisco. He was also associate editor of the Christian Visitor, organ of the Christian Church published in Texarkana, Ark. He came to Abilene from Cisco in 1941. He was 65 when he moved here and although he did not pastor church in this area for extended lengths of time, he often spoke in Abilene and surrounding towns. Special services were held in the First Christian Church here on the 50th anniversary of his entering the ministry in 1946 and again in 1956 at the Second Christian Church on his 60th anniversary. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; five daughters, Mrs. C. M. Arbaugh of Sweetwater, Mrs. T. M. Ragsdale of Memphis, Tenn., Mrs. A. K. Moe of El Paso, Mrs. R. C. Allison of Dallas and Mrs. R. B. Witte of Cincinnati, Ohio; three sons, Dr. James McKissick of Odessa, Dr. C. B. McKissick of McKinney and R. W. McKissick of 750 Rivercrest Dr.; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. R. W.
