Bio

Frank M. "Lefty" Challis, 77, Bonanza, died Tuesday in Klamath Falls. Mr. Challis was born in Oklahoma to Leon and Myrtle Challis. He moved to the KLamath Basin in 1926 and was married to Matilda Bodner in 1928. He worked for the Lorenza Lumber Co. before he and his wife started ranching in the Hildebrand area in 1934. He drilled the first irrigation well in Yonna Valley, where he was raising cattle. Mr. Challis was a professional wrestler and also played professional baseball with the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League in the early 1920s. He held the shot put record at the Logan County Kansas High School for a number of years. He coached in the Sprague River Baseball League for a number of years. One of the highlights of his life was attending bull sales, where he was both a spectator and a buyer. Survivors include his five daughters, Frankie Hill of Bonanza, Virgnia Reddard of Castella, Calif., Anne Curran and Carol Pugh of Redding, Calif., and May Crume of Chiloquin; three sisters, Virginia Heuvel of Klamath Falls, Vera Estes of Battle Mountain, Nev., and Leone Wright of Oakley, Kan.; two half-sisters, Joyce Wheeler of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Betty Hall of Anadarko, Okla., 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
