William Hanks is the son of Joseph and Nancy Ann "Nannie" 'Lee' Hanks. He was born about 1764 in the Rappahannock Country of Virginia. He married Elizabeth Hall. They had 11 known children. William was a Farmer and Blacksmith. After his father's death, William sold the farm to Joseph Nevelt, taking in exchange a treasury warrant for which, on July 17, 1810 he received a patent to land in Grayson Co., KY, near Falls of Rough Creek. He was a farmer. Later he moved to other counties in KY; Nelson, Hardin and Grayson, and then on to IN. In 1828 William moved to what is now Harristown Township, Macon Co., IL of which he is said to have been the first settler. On July 29, 1829 and again on December 2, 1835 he purchased land in Harristown Township. In 1850 he was residing in Macon Co., IL with his son, Charles, 5 of Charles's children and 2 grandchildren. William was a brother to Lucey Hanks, the grandmother of Abraham Lincoln. William served in the War of 1812 in Virginia. My information came from a pension record fround on Ancestry.
