Bio

Maxine Burnett Shoemaker, 88, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009. Funeral: 9:30 a.m. Friday in Greenwood Chapel. Interment: 3 p.m. Friday in Austin Memorial Park. Maxine was born March 31, 1920, in Bowie. While attending the University of North Texas, she met her husband, Chalmers. They were married in 1938. After he earned his degree the same year, they moved to Austin where their two children were born. They later moved to Houston, El Paso, San Angelo and back to Austin for his career advancements with the Texas Employment Commission. While in El Paso, she completed her education at Texas Western, now the University of Texas at El Paso, and taught elementary school. She continued to teach in San Angelo and Austin and retired after 30 years. During the summers while living in El Paso, she became a camp counselor and later director of Mitre Peak Girl Scout Camp near Alpine. Being outdoors, whether camping or gardening, led to her becoming a volunteer with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin for several years before moving to Fort Worth in 1998 to be closer to family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chalmers Aaron Shoemaker; great-grandson, Garrett Aaron Starr; sisters, Betty McEntire and Lovice Hoehmann; and brothers, John Burnett and Robert Burnett. Survivors: Daughter, Madelyn Dean and husband, William, of Fort Worth; son, C. Aaron "Pete" Shoemaker of Mertzon; granddaughter, Lisa Ashlock of Mansfield; grandson, Steve Aaron Starr and wife, Susan, of Arlington; granddaughter, Deanna Shoemaker and husband, Steve Hunt, of West Allenhurst, N.J.; grandson, James Aaron Shoemaker of Alpine; granddaughter-in-law, Jenni Shoemaker of Mason; great-grandchildren, David Ashlock, Kristen Ashlock, Gavin Starr, Aaron Blue Hunt, Jake Aaron Shoemaker and Zane Shoemaker; and sister-in-law, Sue Burnett.
