SPRINGVIEW HERALD June 08, 1939 Springview Keya Paha County Nebraska JOE RUTHER DIED AFTER LONG ILLNESS Joe Ruther, resident of Keya Paha County since a young man, passed away at the family home in Atkinson Wednesday morning. Mr. Ruther has been in very poor health since last fall when physicians announced his illness was caused from cancer. Since then he has been a patient from time to time in the Stuart hospital. When not in the hospital he and Mrs. Ruther lived in Atkinson. Other members of the family live and operate the Ruther ranch about 12 miles northwest of Springview. No plans have been disclosed about funeral arrangements Wednesday afternoon. SPRINGVIEW HERALD June 15, 1939 Springvew Keya Paha County Nebraska JOSEPH RUTHER Joseph Ruth was born in WITTENBURG, GERMANY, May 7, 1865, and passed away at Atkinson, Nebraska, June 7, 1939, at the age of 74 years, 1 months. At the early age of eight years he came with his parents to America. They settled at Ottawa, Illinois, where he grew to manhood. In the year of 1886, when a young man, he came to Nebraska and later took a pioneer homestead in Keya Paha County northwest of Springview. He built his ranch by hard work and suffered many hardships. Mr. Ruther was a prosperous stockman and highly respected citizen of his community. To everyone who knew him he always had a cheerful word and helping hand. On October 5, 1893, he was united in marriage to Helena Martina Hinz. To this union ten children were born, Lawrence, Ernest, Clarence, Frances, Lena, Frank, Charles, Josephine, Martina, and one child who died in infancy. In 1920 he moved his family to Atkinson to give his children a better advantage in school and church. He lived in Atkinson for eight years then went back to take up his duties on the ranch where he lived until his recent illness of seven months. He leaves to mourn his passing, his widow, five sons; Lawrence, Ernest, Clarence of Springview, Frank of Newport, and Charles of CASAPALACE, PERU, SOUTH AMERICA, and four daughter, mrs. Clyde (Frances) Roberts of Stuart, Mrs. Edward (Lena) Dibble of Casper, Wyoming; Mrs. Ray (Josephine) Shaffer of Atkinson, and Mrs. Robert (Martina) Schroeder of Valentine, eleven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Alice Mock of Ainsworth, mrs. Joe Stach of Nenzel, Mrs. Charles Raab of Custer City, Oklahoma; two brothers, John of Inman and Tom of Petersburg, and a host of other relatives and friends. One sister, Cyntha, and a brother Julius, preceded him in death. Funeral servies were held in the Catholic Church in Atkinson, Father Peper officiating. Burial was made in the St. Joseph Cemetery.
