Jackie Mareba Carden, 81, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, in the Acton area of Hood County. Funeral: 10 a.m. Saturday in Laurel Land Memorial Chapel in Fort Worth. Interment: 3 p.m. in Harmony Cemetery in Hopkins County. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Laurel Land Funeral Home. Jackie Mareba Carden was born March 16, 1927, in Floydada, Floyd County, to David Jackson Carden and Opal Azilee Smith Carden. The family moved back to the Winnsboro area of East Texas in the mid-1930s. By the early 1940s, Jackie and her sister, Elba, had moved to Fort Worth. Jackie graduated from Paschal High School. Jackie worked at Freemans Laundry, Oak Farm Dairies, Montgomery-Ward's and Leonard's. While working at Oak Farms Dairies, she enrolled at Texas Wesleyan College and received her BS degree in 1961. Jackie went on to obtain a master's degree and did doctoral studies. In 1962, Miss Carden began teaching fourth grade at Bess Race Elementary School in the Crowley ISD. Two years later she was promoted to principal. She served in that capacity until she retired in 1986. Ministries that she supported were Union Gospel Mission, Victory Temple Men's Home, Teen Challenge and Metro Ministries. She worked to obtain numerous college scholarships and aided in adoptions of children. Jackie served as a church youth director for 18 years and also as a summer camp director. Survivors: Her sister, Elba Carden Crumby and her daughters, Barbara and Deborah Crumby; cousins; nieces and nephews; and the hundreds of children who attended her school in the Crowley ISD.
