Nelson's papers state that while supporting a battery of men, he received a gun shot wound of the left cheek which greatly injures his left eye and painfully affects his head. The pain Nelson suffered may have very well been the cause of the marriage break up between him and his wife Amanda in 1889. She left the state for Chotan, Indian Territory, and died in 1898 possibly in Oklahoma. Nelson later married Pheobe J. Hardesty Davis, widow of Joseph Davis also of the 35th.
