Paul Lee Ryba, age 74, passed away Wednesday morning, October 1, 2008, at the Meade District Hospital, Meade, Kansas. He was born April 25, 1934, at Duncan, Nebraska, the son of Peter J. and Maria B. (Kozak) Ryba. As a young boy he lived in Duncan until 1936, when his father was killed in an accident. The family then moved to Columbus, Kansas, to be near family. In 1948, he moved to Fresno, California, and resided with his sister, Ann Sanchez until 1950. In October, 1951, he entered into the United States Navy, serving aboard the U.S.S. McKean, the U.S.S. Evansville, and the U.S.S. Erben, during the Korean War. While in the navy he received the China Service Medal, two engagement stars K-8 and K-9, and the National Defense Service Medal. On April 22, 1955, he was honorably discharged and moved to Hutchinson, Kansas. In 1959, he moved to Meade. A few years later on June 23, 1962, he married Donna Joan Elledge, in the home of her aunt Ruth, who served as a probate judge. Upon their marriage, the couple made their home in Meade. They were blessed with two sons while in Meade, Kelly Lee and Tyler Lewis Ryba. In 1968, they moved to Denver, Colorado and later Arvada Colorado until 1982. They later returned back to Dodge City. In June 1997, Paul retired from Excel as the lead man. They couple later moved to Toronto, Kansas, in 1998 before returning to Meade in 2003. Paul was a member of Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, a member of the American Legion, since 1959, and the Local Engineers #1. He was an avid sports fan, following the Denver Broncos, the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers, and most of all watching his grandchildren. He also enjoyed gardening and watching old western and John Wayne movies. He is survived by his wife, Donna Ryba of Meade, Kansas; two sons, Kelly Ryba and wife, Tracy of Littleton, Colorado, and Tyler Ryba and wife, Nicole of Cheney, Kansas; mother-in-law, Bonnie Elledge of Meade, Kansas; five grandchildren, Alison and Melisa Ryba of Littleton, Colorado, Emily, Payton, and Brody Ryba of Cheney, Kansas; a step-grandson, Dakota Klitzke of Cheney, Kansas; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, John, Lonnie, Stephen, Tom, Martin, and Carl Ryba; and four sisters, Ann Sanchez, Victoria Stevens, Vernie Burnett, Emily Loske. Vigil services will be held 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 6, 2008, at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, Meade. Holy mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at the church with the Reverend Angel Dy presiding. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday to sign the register at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade. The casket will remain closed. Interment will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Meade, with military honors provided by the United States Navy.
