John Joseph was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 30, 1871. According to the US Federal Census dated July 30, 1870, for the 15th Ward, Chicago, Illinois, John (listed as Joseph)was living with Stanislaus Badura )his fathers brother) and his family when he was 2 months old. His parents were not listed as living with them. On the June 7, 1880 US census he was still living with his uncle Stanislaus and Stanislaus' family. He was 9 years old. They lived on Blackhawk Street in Chicago, Illinois.
