LILLIAN JANDA MCKAY, 91, passed away on October 27, 2008, in Humble, Texas. She was born on November 7, 1916, in Ammonsville, Texas, to Louis and Mary Janda and her family moved to Fairchild, Texas in 1917. In 1933 Lillian entered the St. Joseph School of Nursing in Houston and graduated in 1937 as a Registered Nurse. She met her future husband, Haden E. McKay, Jr., M.D., at St. Joseph Hospital and they were married in 1941 and as a newlywed moved to Humble, Texas. Mrs. McKay was a longtime member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Humble and she served the church in many capacities through the years and for twenty five years was the chariman of the Blood Bank at St. Mary's. She was also a member of the Methodist Church Garden Club where she served as project chairman. Lillian was instrumental in the establishment of the Humble Bicentennial Museum where she served on the Board of Directors and was the curator from 1976 until 1998. She was a charter member of the Humble Women of Rotary Club. Lillian was active in the Women's Auxiliary of the Harris County Medical Society and served as a delegate from Texas to the Women's Auxiliary of the American Medical Association. In 1980 Lillian was named Citizen of the Year by the Humble Area Chamber of Commerce and in 1988 she was commissioned as a Yellow Rose of Texas by Governor Bill Clements. Lillian was honored in 1989 with an award from the Harris County Medical Society for her service in the Women's Auxiliary from 1941-1989. In 1990 she received the Community Leader Award from Family Time Foundation's Women of Achievement and Lillian and Dr. McKay were honored by the Northeast Hospital Foundation at their annual gala. In 1993 the City of Humble named the museum building the Lillian McKay Museum Building and in April 2006 the Humble Post Office was renamed the Lillian McKay Post Office. In April of 1971 Dr. McKay was elected Mayor of the City of Humble and he served twenty four years. Lillian served along side her husband as the First Lady of Humble and is still affectionately known as the First Lady of Humble for her years of service to and love of the city. Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Haden E. McKay, Jr., M.D. in 1996. She is survived by her nieces, Carolyn Sunshine Janda Overkamp and Suzanne McKay Gager; and her nephew Rocky Janda and wife Sally. She is further survived by her great nephews Rick Overkamp and wife Donna, Haden Janda and wife Jenny, Hunter Janda and wife Jennifer; and great nieces Mandi Overkamp, Mari Overkamp-Smith and husband Steve, Nicole Janda McNamee and husband Seth and Christine Gager; and great-great nephews Matthew Smith and Miles Haden McNamee; and great-great nieces Riley Smith and Laura Overkamp. Visitation will be held at Rosewood Funeral Home on Thursday, October 30, 2008, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 31, 2008, at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 527 South Houston Avenue, Humble, Texas. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Humble Bicentennial Museum, 219 Main Street, Humble, Texas 77338. ∼ Wife of Dr. Haden Edwards McKay, Jr. . A registered nurse who graduated from the St. Joseph School of Nursing in 1937, Lillian McKay and her husband, Dr. Haden McKay, tended to the physical ailments of Humble residents at the McKay Clinic for numerous years. Former curator of the Humble Museum, where she worked since its inception in 1976. In 1993, the Humble Museum has renamed their building the "Lillian McKay Building". She has also received many honors, including the Humble Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year, Yellow Rose of Texas Award, FamilyTime Women of Achievement Community Leader Award and Northeast Medical Center Hospital Foundation Gala Honoree. The U.S. Post Office in Humble, Texas has been renamed the "Lillian McKay Post Office Building".
