obituary published in Garden City Telegram May 6, 2004 SUBLETTE - Vernon H. Hallsted, 79, of Fort Dodge and formerly of Sublette, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 1, 2004, at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, Okla. He was born June 8, 1924, at Chadron, Neb., to Raymond Vernon and Ruth Eugene Thomson Hallsted. He graduated from Washakie County High School in Worland, Wyo., and attended Los Angeles City College. On Aug. 17, 1946, he married Margie Griffith Duncan at Greenville, Tenn. In 1949, they moved from the area of Chapel Hill and Durham, N.C., to Sublette, where he was in partnership with his father in home construction from 1949 to 1954. He served as Postmaster in Sublette before retiring Aug. 28, 1981. Mr. Hallsted was a former member of First Baptist Church and the United Methodist Church, both at Sublette, belonged to Sublette American Legion Post No. 205 Color Guard/Firing Squad, VFW, First United Methodist Church of Dodge City, Builders Sunday school class, AARP and the Ford County Retired Senior Volunteer Program, was a life member of the Good SAMS Camper Club and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and was in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theatre and receiving the Bronze Star. He had been a Boy Scout leader in Wyoming, Oregon and Kansas, and enjoyed spending time with his children, camping, fishing, traveling, reading, crafts, spending time with his grandsons, and traveling back to North Carolina with his wife to visit relatives. Survivors include a son, David H. Hallsted of Tulsa; a daughter, Cathy Reeves of Dodge City; and three grandsons. His wife died Oct. 2, 1999. He also was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Dodge City, with Dr. Mike Gardner officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette, with military graveside services conducted by Sublette American Legion Post No. 205. Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette, and 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church in Dodge City. Memorials are suggested to Spanish Peaks Scout Ranch or the Kansas Soldiers Home at Fort Dodge, both in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
